Free Printable Flash Cards for the First Alpha Phonics Lessons (1–5)

When my children were first learning to read, I loved using Alpha Phonics as a supplement in our homeschool. We weren’t following it as our main program, but it became such a simple and effective tool to reinforce what we were already learning. Sometimes, having a different way to practice the same skill is exactly what a little learner needs.

I remember those early days—short vowel sounds, tiny little words, and big smiles when the letters finally clicked together. To make those first steps a little more hands-on, I put together a set of flash cards for Alpha Phonics lessons 1–5. They gave us a change of pace and helped keep practice lighthearted.

Why Flash Cards Helped Us

Even though the Alpha Phonics book is straightforward, my kids loved being able to hold a word in their hands. Flipping through cards made practice feel more like a game than a lesson. Some days we’d use them for a quick review, other days for a race against the clock, and sometimes we just spread them out on the table and matched them up with sounds we were learning in other subjects.

The best part? These little cards gave my children a sense of ownership. Every time they read a word correctly, they got to add it to their “I can read this!” pile. Watching that pile grow was so encouraging for both of us.

For Your Homeschool

I wanted to share these cards with you, in case you’d like to use them the same way—as a supplement alongside Alpha Phonics or any other beginning phonics program. They’re simple, but they give variety to review and make practice more engaging, especially for little ones who benefit from repetition in different forms.

You’ll find every word from lessons 1–5 included, covering those first simple blends and short vowel sounds.
