Five Days with Owl Moon: A Cozy Learning Experience with Five in a Row

Last week, we dove into Owl Moon by Jane Yolen for our Five in a Row lessons, and it was such a hit! There’s something magical about the book’s winter setting, and both Five in a Row Volume 2 and the Character Christian Unit Study Book had great activities that helped bring the story to life!

Here’s a peek at how our week went and the simple ways we explored Owl Moon together.

Day 1: Reading, Narration & Geography

We began by reading Owl Moon together, and it was such a cozy start to our week! The story’s setting opened up a natural geography lesson. We talked about what a “winter forest” looks like, then found snowy forest areas on a map and discussed the climate of each. I asked the kids to describe what they imagined during the owl walk, and they each had their own ideas, which was the highlight of Monday’s lessons!

Day 2: Science & Nature Study

We used today to explore the science side, focusing on owls and their habitats. We looked up pictures of different types of owls and talked about what makes them unique as birds (their big eyes, sharp talons, and how they fly silently!). We also learned about nocturnal animals, and I introduced a fun owl pellet kit for hands-on exploration. They loved this part, and it made science really come to life!

Day 3: Social Studies & Character Study

Today, we connected the story’s themes with real-life values. From the Character Christian Unit Study Book, we explored patience and perseverance, talking about how the girl waits quietly with her father to see the owl. Then, for social studies, we discussed different family traditions and how people in various parts of the world spend time together outdoors. I shared how the owl walk was a kind of “family tradition” for the girl and her father. The kids shared traditions that are special to us, too.

Day 4: Art & Imagery

Owl Moon is beautifully illustrated, so we spent today focusing on art. We used chalk pastels on dark paper to create our own winter night scenes, blending blues, grays, and whites to make the sky and trees look frosty. This was also a great time to talk about shadows and how light works at night, touching briefly on the concept of moonlight and reflection. The kids were so proud of their artwork!*

Day 5: History & Reflection

To wrap up the week, we revisited the idea of night walks, something people have done for centuries in different cultures. We looked at short stories about explorers, early settlers, and even Native American night traditions to get a historical perspective. Then, we read Owl Moon once more. The kids noticed new details and felt a deeper connection to the story after the week of lessons. Each of us shared our favorite moments from the week, and we even listed all the things we learned in different subjects to reflect on the full experience.

Five in a Row has truly been such a blessing for our family, especially when it comes to covering subjects beyond the core areas of language arts, reading, and math. While I initially thought of it as just a reading program, it quickly showed me how much more it could be. The way Five in a Row pulls in topics like science, geography, art, and character development—often all from one story—has been incredible for keeping our days varied and engaging.

With Owl Moon, for example, we didn’t just read a beautiful story and practice narration. We were able to dive into a hands-on science lesson with owl pellets, learn about nighttime ecosystems, and even touch on geography by discussing winter habitats. Each day felt like we were exploring something new, yet it all tied back to the book, which helped my kids make connections and deepen their understanding!

This approach has allowed us to keep learning fresh and flexible. Instead of juggling separate textbooks or worksheets for every subject, Five in a Row gives us a framework that makes learning feel seamless. My kids are learning history and geography through stories, studying nature and science hands-on, and even developing art skills—all while building a love for books and learning. It’s amazing how much we can cover without feeling overwhelmed.

For anyone wanting a curriculum that’s gentle yet rich, with room for personal connections and hands-on activities, Five in a Row has been perfect. I’m grateful that it keeps our days balanced, meaningful, and full of discovery!

Have a blessed day!
