5-Day Lesson Plan for Using the Alpha Phonics Reading Program
When I first started teaching our children how to read, I found the Alpha Phonics Reading Program to be a wonderful, simple resource. It guided us through those early days of phonics, when every new sound felt like a milestone. If you’re just beginning this journey too, I hope this five-day lesson plan gives you a good starting point and is a blessing to your family. I set this up in a similar way to the McGuffey‘s lesson plans where the focus is one lesson per week. It can be shorter or longer based on what your little ones are ready for. While it is not a necessity for your child to know all of their letter sounds before beginning this course, I would recommend they are at least familiar with them. I structured this lesson plan to be gentle yet effective, with a mix of learning and fun activities that keep your little ones engaged!
Here’s how we use Alpha Phonics to build a strong reading foundation:

Sorry for the scribbles, this is very well used.
Day 1: Introduction & Blending Excitement!
- Objective: Introduce the new program and begin the first lesson. This is the perfect moment to show the magic of blending sounds!
- Make it Exciting:
- Use an engaging tone: “Are you ready to discover how these sounds work together?”
- Demonstrate blending slowly (e.g., “/a/—/t/… What word does that make? AT!”).
- Use magnetic letters or letter tiles to physically move the sounds together as you blend them.
- Activities:
- Go through the new sounds and blends slowly. Encourage your child to repeat each one and cheer them on as they blend!
- Use flash cards! This is my favorite way to teach letter blends. I put the “A” and a consonant on a card with an arrow, so the child can take their finger and physically match the letters together. *See photos below* On the flip side, I place the letters together so they can see the entire blend. It’s similar to how Teach your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons structures their lessons.
- Celebrate every time your child blends a word correctly: “Wow! You just read that all by yourself!” ❤️

Day 2: Review & Oral Practice
- Objective: Reinforce the blending skills introduced.
- Activities:
- Re-read the blends from Day 1 together.
- Play a “Who Can Say It First?” game: You say each sound slowly, and your child blends them into a word as fast as they can.
- Use silly sentences with the new words to make the lesson fun and memorable! This is always so much fun!

Day 3: Mastering Blends with Flashcards
- Objective: Reinforce blending skills with a hands-on activities!
- Activity:
- Use your flashcards with an “A” and a consonant
- Have your child use their finger to blend the letters together by following the arrow.
- Flip the card over to reveal the full blend (e.g., “AT”).
- Celebrate every successful blend to keep the excitement going!
This simple, tactile activity helps your child see and feel the blending process, making it fun and memorable. This is the third day, so at this point, your little ones should be starting to master lesson!

Day 4: Context Practice with Stories or Sentences
- Objective: Use the new words in real-world contexts. “I AM glad.”
- Activities:
- Read a simple story or paragraph that includes the new words.
- Ask your child to help you find and read the new words aloud from the story.
- Work together to create silly or creative sentences using as many words from the lesson as possible.

Day 5 (Optional): Fun Review Day
- Objective: Reinforce through games and creativity.
- Activities:
- Play bingo or matching games with words from the lesson.
- Use letter tiles to scramble words and ask your child to put them back in the correct order.
- Ask your child to “teach” the lesson to you or a sibling—they’ll love the role reversal!

This simple, five-day structure helped us gradually build reading skills without overwhelming our little ones. The Alpha Phonics Reading Program gave us a solid foundation, and the best part was that we were able to actually enjoy the process!
If you’re using Alpha Phonics or thinking about starting, I hope this plan gives you some inspiration! Teaching your child to read is one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do—celebrate those little victories along the way!

Thank you so much for stopping by!
